General FAQ

  • Do I have/How do I get an ECC account?
    To determine if you already have an account at the ECC, visit the Helpdesk with your Student ID Card. If you do not have an account and you are enrolled in the College of Engineering or are taking an Engineering/Computer Science class, you may fill out an account application (available at the Helpdesk). PLEASE NOTE: Filling out an application does not guarantee that you will be given an account.

  • How do I save a Microsoft Word file as a PDF?
    In order to save a Microsoft Word Document as a PDF, you need to follow the steps listed here.

  • What is my Username and Password?
    Please visit the Helpdesk with your Student ID Card to find out your username and initial password.

  • How much print quota do I get?
    Undergraduates: 130 Pages Per Month
    Graduates: 150 Pages Per Month
    Visitors (Those not enrolled in the College of Engineering but taking a qualifying class): 50 Pages Per Month

  • How much disk quota do I get?
    Windows Disk Quota: 40MB
    Linux Disk Quota: 40MB

  • Do I have/How do I get an ECC email address/account?
    Anyone with an existing ECC account has and ECC email account. For instructions on accessing your account, please see the Windows or Unix FAQ pages.

  • I forgot my password, how do I reset it?/How do I change my password?
    Please visit the Helpdesk and ask one of our friendly assistants to change your password. ***YOU MUST PRESENT YOUR STUDENT ID CARD IN ORDER TO GET YOUR PASSWORD CHANGED AT THE HELPDESK.***

    If you have not forgotten your password but would like to change it, log in to one of the ECC machines and do the following:
    WINDOWS: Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then click on "Change Password." Enter your old and new passwords, and press "ok". A popup window will appear verifying that your password has been changed. Press "ok" on the popup, and wait to be returned to the options page. PLEASE NOTE: There is a significant delay before you are returned to the options page.
    LINUX: Open a Terminal Window, type "passwd", and follow the directions.


  • What is a secure password?
    To be secure, your password should contain:
    • at least six (6) characters
    • at least one (1) uppercase letter
    • at least one (1) lowercase letter
    • at least one (1) number
    • at least one (1) symbol
    And it must NOT contain any part of your full name or username.

  • How do I transfer files between an ECC machine and my home machine?
    Windows:
    • Email your files as attachments; then download and save them from your email.
    • Transfer your files via Thumb Drive.
    • Transfer your files via Floppy Disk.
    • Transfer your files via CD.

    Linux:

    • Remotely login from an ECC Unix machine to your home machine (or from your home machine to an ECC Unix machine) and use the "scp" command to securly transfer your files. Note: Requires your home machine to have remote login capability. (For more information on SCP, type "man scp" at a Terminal prompt.)
    • Email your files as attachments; then download and save them from your email.
    • Transfer your files via Thumb Drive.
    • Transfer your files via Floppy Disk.
    • Transfer your files via CD.

  • What is MSDN AA?
    The MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDN AA) is a service allowing UNR College of Engineering students to purchase certain software products from Microsoft at a reduced price.

  • What products are available through MSDN AA?

  • Does the ECC have Wireless Access?
    Yes. You should use your UNR NetID information to access the wireless network.

  • Can I hook up my laptop to the ECC network?
    No. However, Wireless Access is available in the ECC. To use Wireless Access, your laptop must be equiped with a Wireless Network Card.

  • Can I install programs on ECC machines?
    No. You may, however, run executable programs that do not attempt to install the program.

  • How do I get on the Engineering Listserve?
